As the Lakers aim to get their season back on track, LeBron James will continue to be in and out of the lineup.

Heading into the season, James had set a personal goal to play in all 82 of LA's regular-season games. However, a recent slump, combined with an aggravated foot injury, led James and the Lakers' front office to reassess that target. On Sunday, December 8, the injury sidelined him for his first game of the year.

Thanks to the NBA Cup break, the Lakers had some time off before their next game. James returned to the court on Sunday, December 15, after missing two games and taking some time away from the team.

Here’s everything you need to know about James' status and why he was absent:

Why was LeBron James not playing?

James missed Friday's game due to left foot soreness but returned on Sunday in the Lakers’ victory over the Grizzlies. He recorded 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists in 34 minutes of action.

The foot issue had first caused him to miss his first game of the season on December 8. He was also excused from practice on Wednesday for personal reasons, which extended his time away from the team.

After Sunday's game, James gave insight into his absence.

"A lot of rehabbing, a lot of training to make sure I was ready to go tonight," he explained. "I didn’t want to get too out of shape. I had the opportunity to take a few extra days to get my mind and body where I wanted it to be, and it worked out."

Despite some inconsistent performances, James is still averaging 22.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 9.1 assists through 24 games this season. The Lakers, however, have struggled recently, losing eight of their last 12 games after a promising 10-4 start.

LeBron will turn 40 on December 30.
